India: How the Spirit Becomes Matter

India: How the Spirit Becomes Matter

Especially for Cosmoscow, collectors of Indian art Ekaterina and Andrey Terebenin present their selection of works by contemporary Indian artists and designers from three leading Indian galleries as a special COLLECTORS project.

“When selecting the works presented at this stand, we set ourselves the task of illustrating what we believe to be the most interesting trends in contemporary Indian art. A combination of traditional painting and craft techniques and bold intellectual and technological solutions. A strong connection with the Indian religious and philosophical foundation, with its ideas of gaining subtle energies and different levels of perception of the world around us.

Another theme typical of Indian art is the relationship between the artist and the material he works with. We see an utmost respect for the material among Indian masters and a willingness to interact with it, rather than subjugate and dominate it. In India, the material, along with the idea, has become a full-fledged participant in the creative process. This is clearly visible in the works selected for Cosmoscow. They use a variety of materials: natural pigments and gold, wood, silk, and handmade paper. Forms freely move from one material to another, creating a single artistic language. The unique artistic language of India.”
