The first of its kind in Voronezh, the HLAM contemporary art gallery was established in 2008 by Alexey Gorbunov. The gallery is focused on further development of the art scene in Voronezh, discovering new artists and making regional art part of the Russian as well as international context. By July 2014 the gallery had held 69 exhibitions. Some of them were nominated and the artists became winners of major Russian contemporary art awards including the Kandinsky Prize (2011) and the Innovation award (2012).

Artists who began their careers at HLAM or whose works have been regularly exhibited in the gallery (Ivan Gorshkov, Ilya Dolgov, Nikolay Alexeev, and Kirill Garshin) are widely sought after in Russia as well as internationally. HLAM has held exhibitions of Andrey Kuzkin, Arseniy Zhilyaev, Vladimir Logutov, Mikhail Lylov, Irina Zatulovskaya, Alexander Florensky, Leonid Tishkov, etc. HLAM’s activity inspired the first-ever Voronezh festival of contemporary art, Chernozem. This festival took place for the first time in March 2010. In February 2009 the Voronezh Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) was established on the grounds of HLAM.
