SOUND UP x COSMOSCOW: Piano Theatre for 6 grand pianos

On the opening day of the 10th edition of Cosmoscow, SOUND UP new music festival will present the Piano Theatre project. It will introduce listeners to groundbreaking scores from the 20th and 21st centuries that have redefined the ways a piano can sound like and how it can be played.

Musicians will perform the famous “Six Pianos” play by the founding father of minimalism Steve Reich, the iconic “Evil Nigger” opus by African-American punk Julius Eastman, the author’s edition of the 15th century love song “Face so Pale” by David Lang, as well as fragments from the “Lemniscaat” by the Dutch minimalist Simeon ten Holt and “Ripalmania” by his devoted follower Jeroen van Veen.

Besides music for a 528-key ensemble, the program will include pieces for a prepared piano and pieces for a miniature toy piano, including the most famous academic work for the most frivolous musical instrument, “Suite” by John Cage.

The Piano Theater will feature the best Moscow pianists: Mikhail Dubov, Maria Sadurdinova, Vladimir Ivanov-Rakievsky, Ulyana Lovchikova, Pavel Dombrovsky, and Ekaterina Khokhlova.
